"Next to Normal is a musical with book and lyrics written by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt that was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2009. It is known for its complex portrayal of mental health disorders and treatments (including bringing light to ethically controversial treatments, such as ECT), particularly regarding bipolar disorder, depression, and suicidal thoughts and actions. It follows a family that has lived through tragedy and loss highlighting how tragedy and the resulting mental health issues affect all members of the family.
Our production dates were chosen carefully in order to align the AM Theatrical’s goal to benefit groups in need with the national Suicide Prevention Awareness as well as Depression and Health Screening Months. This production will partner with mental health organizations in our community for talk back opportunities after each performance so that this production can serve as a catalyst for people to talk openly about the mental health crisis in our country as well as the need for safe spaces to discuss grief, loss, depression, anxiety, and mental health in general.
